I did not pass the IELTS on my first try. Here is what I did next.

Prep Stories by PrepMeWell is a series where past students share how they prepared for their proficiency exams, what worked, and how it shaped their journey to Canada and beyond.

Before you give up on your IELTS journey or any other proficiency exam, read how John went from a failed IELTS attempt to Canadian PR.

Maybe you have written the exam multiple times and still do not have the score you need. You are wondering if it is even worth trying again.

John was in that exact place. But one decision changed everything.

Here is how it happened.

How did your Canada PR journey start?

It started in January 2025 when a close friend, someone who has since become like a brother to me, reached out with advice that would change my life. He had successfully completed his own PR process and kept telling me that someone had made the whole thing feel almost magical.

That someone was Lyrical from PrepMeWell. I call him Super Agent.

My friend strongly recommended this consultant. I was sceptical at first, but I trusted him, and I made the call.

From our very first conversation, I felt a huge weight lift off my shoulders. He did not just give advice. He created a clear, personalised roadmap tailored to my profile: my age, education, work experience, and current situation. He explained every step, from building my Express Entry profile to maximising my Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score. What felt like a chaotic maze suddenly became a structured path.

What was the biggest challenge during your process?

One of the biggest hurdles in my journey was the IELTS exam. I needed a strong score to boost my CRS points and meet the minimum requirements for the Federal Skilled Worker (FSW) stream.

I wrote my first IELTS in March 2025 and did not hit the target band score I needed. I felt disappointed because I had worked hard. The pressure of knowing that every 0.5 band could mean getting an Invitation to Apply (ITA) or having to wait longer made me feel stuck.

What changed before your second attempt?

Instead of rushing into another exam, we approached things differently. Lyrical reviewed my previous IELTS performance, identified the areas where I struggled, and recommended more targeted preparation with PrepMeWell.

I could see the difference from the first class. I learned what the examiners wanted, how to approach each section, and how to avoid the mistakes I made before. I was not just studying harder; I was studying smarter.

I retook the IELTS in April 2025 and finally got the score I needed. That improvement gave my Express Entry profile the boost it needed.

What happened after your IELTS score improved?

After I got my IELTS results, I completed the remaining steps in the relocation process. I submitted my Educational Credential Assessment (ECA), proof of funds, and work experience documents.

In May 2025, I entered the Express Entry pool. A few months later, in October 2025, my CRS score became competitive, and I received my Invitation to Apply (ITA).

I submitted my full PR application in November 2025, and the biometrics and medical exams went smoothly.

Then, I began waiting.

How was the waiting process?

I felt anxious during the long silences after sending my application. Every time I checked my portal and saw no updates, I felt more uncertain.

However, Lyrical kept me updated and reassured at every step. Whenever I started to doubt, he always had the right words to say.

That kind of support is invaluable.

When did you find out you got approved?

Then, in March 2026, after several months of waiting, I received my Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR).

The entire process, from January 2025 to approval, took approximately 15 months. But nothing prepares you for the moment you see that confirmation. Every effort, every doubt, and every anxious portal check was worth it.

What lessons did you learn from the journey?

Looking back, I learned a few key lessons that I wish someone had shared with me at the start.

First, do not underestimate the IELTS. It can be challenging, but with the right strategy — like the one I received from PrepMeWell — and consistent effort, you can succeed. A poor first attempt is not the end.

Beyond that, professional guidance makes a big difference. Having Lyrical by my side felt truly magical, just like my friend described. He took care of the complex parts, allowing me to focus on what mattered.

Finally, trust the process. Gather your documents early, respond quickly to any requests, and keep your information accurate. The right support makes the journey easier and possible.
